Time to send Trump Cali’s middle finger?

Don’t want get in bed with Putin or be part of dismantling NATO?

Not interested in going to war with China?

You actually really like our Mexican neighbors.

You know Climate disruption is not a hoax and want slow it down with clean energy.

Don’t recognize autocratic traitor Trump as your President?

Maybe this movement, which was started two years ago by some extreme rightwing dude living in Russia Louis Marinell, and is now quickly being co-opted by the left is for you. It’s called Calexit or Yes California……….

180 days to qualify for the ballot

Californians who want their state to secede from the United States can now start collecting signatures to put the initiative on the 2018 ballot.

The Yes California Independence Campaign has been around for at least two years, but the election of President Trump only saw increased momentum for the so-called Calexit cause. Trump lost California by more than 4 million votes, fueling interest in a Calexit — a play on the United Kingdom’s “Brexit” campaign that saw that country’s voters decide to leave the European Union.

The California secretary of state’s office announced that the group could begin collecting signatures on Thursday.

The group needs 585,407 signatures from registered voters over the next 180 days to qualify for the ballot.

If the 2018 ballot initiative passes, it would force a 2019 statewide special election asking voters if they want California to become an independent country.

Supporters first proposed a ballot measure to the state attorney general’s office in November.

According to a summary prepared by the state attorney general, if the measure got onto the ballot and passed, it would repeal clauses in the California Constitution stating that the state is an “inseparable part of the United States” and that the U.S. Constitution is the “supreme law of the land,” the Los Angeles Times reported.

It’s not clear whether a California secession would be handled by the federal government, even if the state’s voters approved it. ….from The Hill

If nothing else it would be a very strong statement of resistance!

  1. Hey, I thought California splitting into CA and Lincoln back in the 70s and 80s but knew it wouldn’t happen.
I think putting this to a vote could make people see themselves differently, less ‘national chattel’ and more ‘California wiseass’
When Howard Jarvis started the Prop 13 movement (and even after, when I saw how it hurt libraries and other small tax districts (fire departments, etc) I was very opposed to it.
Now, seeing how the lawmakers keep coming after us for more and more taxes I have to recognize that Prop 13 has kept California from raising property taxes so that people had to sell because they couldn’t pay their taxes.
Yes, we still get hit with the sales taxes (and other ones) but it’s our fellow citizens who vote for those, so shame on them.
I don’t know that an independent California would work…I know we already send more money to the federal government than we get back from them so if we were both countries, they’d be a debtor nation to us. But I do think it could send a strong message that even if we’re still a state within a united states, that we are independent type people and don’t take us for granted.

Having followed the vote in Scotland two years ago I remember all the difficulties discussed about how to split things us, I know it would be difficult.
But I think a lot of people in Scotland now wish they had voted for independence what with Brexit taking away free access to the EU and those markets.

  2. We’ll take from the Oregon border to Ukiah, you guys can have the rest of the Peoples Republic of Kalifronia.

  3. SO first, I believe It was not Lincoln but the name Jefferson that N. Cal. and S. Oregon proposed by up state residents to create a new state.

Now on to current threats to us all. Most of the following came from a website called http://www.facinghistory.com It is worth checking out. How does a democratic government deal with terrorism and violent political groups who desire to destroy the democracy……..Watch for a judiciary who strike hard at the “terrorists and is overly sympathetic to right wing …groups.
In the post WW1 The Wiemar Republic in Germany was born. In that dynamic environment the viability of democracy was tested and failed. We are now facing our own history in the making. It could well be the way station on the way to a current genocide, when a group is the target, not the Jews this time but Muslims. In a Democracy what is the role of Nationalism with it’s symbols, uniforms? A good minister of propaganda is needed. How about Mr. bright bart, Steve Bannon? Become a student of history and change the present before it goes into the history books.
