Walmart: Not just happy screwing workers; now wants to take away your freedom to make solar power

Walmart is well-known for exploiting its workers and squeezing its suppliers. But what few know is that, in an audacious new move, the Walton family has unleashed its immense resources on a campaign attacking rooftop solar in the United States.

According to a new report, the Walton family, which owns Walmart, is working to undermine rooftop solar by promoting anti-solar state policies and donating millions of dollars to fossil fuel-backed front groups

The Walton family cannot claim to support solar power when it is actively attacking America’s rooftop solar industry. On the heels of these shocking revelations, we have a unique opportunity to show Walmart that funding anti-solar groups is bad for the planet, and bad for business.

The Waltons own a majority stake in First Solar, a Malaysia-based corporation that manufactures large-scale commercial solar arrays that utilities may buy and add to their energy mix to meet state clean energy standards. First Solar is putting a bet on utility-scale solar, which wants to rig the playing field by suppressing residential solar installations. In a nakedly self-serving move, First Solar is working to impose fees on residential households with rooftop solar.

First Solar sees rooftop solar as a competitive threat, and is heavily involved in cutthroat campaigns nationwide to destroy the residential rooftop solar industry and make it harder for Americans to go solar.

Their strategy is already working in Arizona, where residential solar installations dropped 40% after Walton family-supported fees were introduced, leading to unprecedented job losses in Arizona’s solar industry. Not satisfied with a single state, the Waltons have also given millions to pro-fossil fuel groups like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and the Koch brothers front group, Americans for Prosperity, to fund similar anti-clean energy policies across the country.

Walmart claims that it “envisions a world where people do not have to choose between electricity they can afford and renewable electricity that is good for communities and the planet,” but it is working against that vision by attacking an increasingly popular way for American families to access solar power.3 A public campaign will discredit Walmart’s carefully cultivated greenwashing campaign, and get the Walton family’s attention by calling out their hypocrisy.

  1. Anyone that won’t identify themselves can have NO STANDING commenting on anything. Stop being such a COWARD and maybe you opinions might be taken more seriously. Until then, just STFU!!!!

    • Or what?

      What then?

This is a town with claimed/self identified Klan and Aryan Nation members, this is the town that slaughtered native americans and/or enslaved them. And then there are the Chinese driven out ‘for their own good.’

In blogs here it is common to see a vigilantism sentiments, a call for murder and torture of people not liked (the Other ..the usual collection of class war and race war) by the commenter… pardon me if I feel just a little less likely to out myself to someone identified so loudly and belligerently with the forces that are most associated with that behavior, the ‘law and order’ white people as defined here in Eureka.

Funny(not) that John Chiv and Rob Arkeley make the same demand to self identify on bloggers, gee, why ever would they do that?…because you are functioning like a right wing gang and have made that clear for along time. What would it take for you to go to the death squad option…not much, in my opinion….reading some of the vigilante jabber you may already have. It looks that way to some people.

Your bullying is clear. I am not intimidated but practical…. but then again youall have access to police buddies so should have no problem finding me, now that I think about it for two seconds. Preserve all records.

    • Keep it up Lee. You really have a knack for influencing discussion with your poignant words. Any other compelling arguments from your right wing perspective to share?

    • i guess you’re against anonymous voting too for the same reason. And of course, the anonymous tipsters who give information to solve crimes are simply cowards with no standing.

But really, I don’t need to know your name to know you’re duplicitous and sneaky. And that means you have no credibility.

    • “maybe you opinions might be taken more seriously”

That’s funny, You’ve identified yourself and I don’t take your opinions seriously at all. I don’t identify myself because I don’t want some weirdo Rightie Stalker showing up at my front door because he lost an on-line argument.

    • Ha, is this the Lee Chappelle that worked at an auto dealership? I’ve got some serious dirt on you my friend!

      This should be fun…

  2. I guess the Walmart family cant find a manufacturer who will sell solar panels to them, unlike Costco. They are throwing a childish fit. So tell them to go sit in their Prius and cool off.
