Crime Wave = More Taxes?

Economic mesery and crimewaves

Public Safety is the reason being cited by the City of Eureka, The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors and the City of Fortuna for sales tax measures being placed on the November ballot.

The Examiner has been posting about the Crime Wave that has been sweeping Eureka and Humboldt County since we started this blog in February. Now the release of a poll done for the County reveals that 66 percent of public said crime was an “extreme” or “serious problem” in the county.

No shit.

This of course sets the stage for asking for tax money to help. The Examiner agrees something needs to be done, our problem is the way it’s going to be accomplished.

Using Measure O as a template has us worried. Our concern is; very little of this tax money will actually be used to increase staffing and patrols, which is what the public wants. (In the case of the County also increasing Jail capacity.)

This is what is being asked for this November:

Fortuna 1%

City of Eureka .5%

County of Humboldt .5%

Will these measures pass?

Will the money be used has intended or be siphoned off to elsewhere?

What do you think?

  1. While past performance is no guarantee of future results, what else have we got to base a decision on? Maybe we’ll have the safest zoo around….

  2. If the tax increase was dedicated to deputies in the field and not fancy armoured tanks or surveillence drones I might vote in favor of it.

    • Basically, you’re paying more money to pay for the retirement and health benefits of those that aren’t working, and those that currently are. You’ll likely get little additional service.

    • Wow…3 comments for what might amount to millions in taxes that are being taken because the current folks in power won’t make the tough choices. I have been pretty tough on Fred, but at least he’s willing to question spending. Sorry Fred, and good luck county. You get the government you that you care for…even if you just don’t care at all!

  3. Sales tax is a regressive tax, because it hurts the people with the least amount of money – the poor.
Also, the money earned on the sales tax cannot be designated for a single purpose. It goes into the general fund.
Country patrols have been been cut, then the county wants more money.

  4. The sales tax in California was 3 per cent in the 50s. Its increase is the flip side of prop 13. In fifty years we have gone from the wealthy paying their fair share to the poor shouldering triple the burden of preceding generations.

In addition the geniuses down at K ST are addicted to sales tax. Since these :”conservatives” have painted themselves into a corner with the property taxes – but of course they all get their incomes through government – they are desperate to increase sales and TOT taxes any way they can including abetting the gutting of our local economy by enabling large corporate parasites to infest our economy. It is their political belief that the poor SHOULD pay all the taxes. Of course they are too stupid to realize that the sales tax boost of a Walmat is only temporary and will eventually result in a net decrease.

You see where we are at? I would like to see a fully staffed EPD with new young line officers, all with a liberal arts 4 year degree. I would like to see these recruits start off with a decent wage. On the other hand we have 30 officers right now in EPD making 100 k a year. That upsets Fred and me too.
We are living In a town where the median income is something like 26k.

I will be voiting against measure Q and working to remove these 10 watt bulbs from the City Council.

    • You’re absolutely right. Prop 13 was sold as the way to stabilize housing costs for elderly fixed income homeowners. But there are much better ways to narrowly accomplish that goal.

Prop 13 was a stealth initiative, whose real purpose was to shift taxes from wealthy property owners to poorer non-property owners. Its a poster child for the dangers of the initiative process, a progressive reform that has become a monster, captive to big money.

I know you don’t like me and you don’t think much of what I have to say so this won’t come off as a complement but it is.

You are exactly right on with what I was going to write about this Wednesday. I would prefer you write on the subject instead. I can’t speak for the TE but I can’t see why they would not run an article from you. Give it a shot.

I’ll come up with something else and I hope you take the suggestion in the spirit is it offered.

    • There was nothing progressive about Prop. 13. Just google Howard Jarvis. What we have here is the complete political circle-jerk: pro-13 real estate interests pack the local government with people who “agree” with them that taxing your underwear is more fair than repealing the Business Loophole in Prop. 13. Choice, really. Rank, too.

  6. An editorial in the Sacramento Bee this morning looks at steps Sacramento has taken to cover their mounting pension costs. Their problems aren’t much different than most other cities in the state. Some cities are trying to ignore the issue. Others try to deal with it:

  7. Lets address the constant speed trapping being performed in Eureka since the new chief took office.

I’m not complaining because I’ve been ticketed, I just observe.

Since Chief Mills took office it seems they feel it’s pointless to deal with real criminals committing crimes in broad daylight.
I’m not sure if its due to jail overcrowding that they do this or simply just the fact that people with cars have money and can fill the coffers better than the poor.

Either way it’s not right and another way for Mills to cook the books
