Public Safety is the reason being cited by the City of Eureka, The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors and the City of Fortuna for sales tax measures being placed on the November ballot.
The Examiner has been posting about the Crime Wave that has been sweeping Eureka and Humboldt County since we started this blog in February. Now the release of a poll done for the County reveals that 66 percent of public said crime was an “extreme” or “serious problem” in the county.
This of course sets the stage for asking for tax money to help. The Examiner agrees something needs to be done, our problem is the way it’s going to be accomplished.
Using Measure O as a template has us worried. Our concern is; very little of this tax money will actually be used to increase staffing and patrols, which is what the public wants. (In the case of the County also increasing Jail capacity.)
This is what is being asked for this November:
City of Eureka .5%
County of Humboldt .5%
Will these measures pass?
Will the money be used has intended or be siphoned off to elsewhere?
What do you think?
